Having been to the ‘real’ Christmas markets in Germany, I was a bit apprehensive about going to the Distillery District Xmas markets. I threw on every piece of winter clothing I had, grabbed my sister and headed on down.

The Distillery District is a historic area with cafés, restaurants, shops and art galleries housed within heritage buildings of the former Gooderham and Worts Distillery. With more than 40 heritage buildings and 10 streets, its apparently the largest collection of Victorian-era industrial architecture in North America and has been the setting for over 800 films and tv shows. The Distillery District is always hit and miss as sometimes there’s absolutely nothing on and you end up wondering aimlessly. This time, I had a mission..shop and eat. And low and behold were the traditional German market huts, my glorious ghluwein and my hearty Bavarian sausages. Along with the usual crap traditional wooden ornaments, we found Alpaca scarfs straight from Peru and funky hot pink cloaks. Although I didn’t get to sit on Santa’s lap, it was a cheerful vibe. I’ll be back next year but at night for the hot mulled wine to fully enjoy the holiday ‘spirit’.
