The city of Toronto has a new Graffiti Panel aimed to settle the question, is Toronto street art vandalism or art?
I personally love street art but not everyone in this city has the same opinion. Currently Toronto building owners are forced to remove graffiti at their own expense. But with the formation of the new “Graffiti Panel”, building owners can now appeal to keep graffiti that is approved.
So what will be approved? The panel defines “Graffiti art” as markings that “aesthetically enhance the surface they cover” while staying true to the character of the neighbourhood they’re in. An interesting definition. But having lived in the UK and seen so many Banksy’s painted over as they were deemed ‘vandalism’…I’d get out there right now and take a stroll around the city to see this city’s street art before it’s too late.
