After being disappointed with the ice cream at Ed’s Real Scoop, I’d heard that Greg’s Ice Cream may be able to give me the Marshmallow fix I need.
Having been in business for nearly 30 years, this Bloor Street institution in the Annex came highly recommended. Known for its creaminess and unique flavours, there are now more than 100 flavours in the Greg’s Ice Cream recipe book. Unfortunately they don’t display them all at one time (I guess it gives you a good reason to keep coming back). But there’s one flavour that truly makes Greg’s Ice Cream unique, their Roasted Marshmallow. Apparently it’s attracted dairies from all over Canada and the U.S. It’s even attracted Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield the founders of Ben & Jerry’s, whom have visited the store for a taste.
So when I walked up to this nondescript shop, I was a bit dubious on whether I’d really stumbled upon the best ice cream in Toronto. But when I took my first bite of Roasted Marshmallow, it was like a campfire in my mouth. In the good way. You get the best of that roasted marshmallow taste without the smoke in the eyes, the fire hazard of when you burn that baby to a crisp, and the sickly feeling you get when you eat more than five.
All I can say is, holy crap this ice cream was amazing and I can’t believe I’d spent the summer in Toronto not knowing about it. Bring on the Green Tea, the Cinnamon, the Stout, the Coffee Toffee and the Peanut Butter and Jelly ice cream….with a second scoop of Roasted Marshmallow.
