My search for the best cupcake in Toronto can stop now. I’ve found Prairie Girl Cupcakes. Holy mother of creamy buttermilk and sweet goodness.
On the underground PATH of First Canadian Place at King and Bay, Prairie Girl Bakery has a small counter which you might not notice, except for the huge line of drooling women waiting to get their Prairie Girl cupcake on. Made fresh every day, you have mouth watering choices like Banana with Peanut Butter Icing, Carrot with Cream Cheese Icing, Chocolate with Peppermint Icing and topped with Peppermints, Peanut Butter and Jelly or my favourite, Vanilla topped with Roasted Coconut Icing.
Made with only butter (no shortening), the cupcakes are free of preservatives, lard and artificial flavours, and are sold on the same day they are made. Any unsold cupcakes are sent to Second Harvest who feed the hungry by picking up excess from restaurants around Toronto. As for the calorie, carbohydrate or other nutritional contents of Prairie Girl Bakery cupcakes? According their website all of their cupcakes are based on “family recipes” and they don’t have a nutritional analysis for them. So yes, they are packed with calorific ingredients that would probably shock us. But the question is, do you really care when it’s this good?
